The Lamb of God
Throughout heaven and earth, there is a great search! A loud voice announces: “Who is worthy to take the scroll and to loose its seals?” (Revelation 5:2). It is the search for a righteous man.
Seated on His glorious throne, surrounded by seraphim proclaiming His holiness, God holds the noble scroll. The scroll is the final judgment of God. It alone will end the tyranny of man’s self-destruction and his devastation of the universe. If the scroll is not loosed, then man will continue in degradation, cruelty, death, sorrow, and pain. Yet, if one is found worthy–just one man out of all the billions who have lived on the earth–then the unrighteousness will cease. Sorrow, death, and destruction will be swallowed up by the judgment of God; and life, peace, joy, comfort, and everlasting life will reign.
Where is the righteous man? Is he hidden among the great mountains of Tibet or living alone in a cabin somewhere in the remote hills of Montana? The search continues.
No man is found among all creation. John begins to cry. All hope is surely lost. Man will destroy himself and live in everlasting torment. Then a shout is heard in the heavens. Humbly approaching the throne of the Almighty God is Jesus: He who spoke, taught, and walked with men; He who never sinned but lived righteously among all. Jesus, slain for the unrighteous, alone is worthy to take the scroll and loose its seals.
Heaven is silent as the Lamb of God approaches. As Jesus takes the scroll, suddenly the four seraphim and the elders about the throne fall down in praise and sing with their harps:
“You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals;
For You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood
Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
And have made us kings and priests to our God;
And we shall reign on the earth.”
